PLATINUM [Pt 78]

The platinum belt  of mines where the horror of the Marikana Massacre unfolded on 16 August 2012. South Africa bears over 80% of the worlds platinum group minerals (PGM’s) resources.

This is the first of an ongoing series of informative videos on Jeannette Unite’s engagement with Earth matters, mining and the mineral that are harvested to manufacture our contemporary world. Incorporating mining histories, geology and sharing Unite’s recipes using the elements in the periodic table that she mines for her paintbox.

As we began filming a Hadeda, from the Ibis family, walked into the studio. The bird’s entrapment and inability to escape, seemed symbolic of the plight of miners underground. Highlighting contrasts of wild to manufactured, a “Paradox of Plenty” in an Aladdin’s cave.
